What does Neuro-diversity mean?

The term neuro-diversity was first coined in the late 1990s by sociologist Judy Singer, who is autistic herself. Her goal was to shift the conversation away from labels like deficits and disorders, instead focusing on the value of different ways of thinking.

Neuro-diversity acknowledges that every brain functions differently, it’s just part of natural human variation.

It celebrates individual contribution and reinforces that there’s no single “right way” for a brain to work.

Neurological differences should be recognised and respected, just like other aspects of identity such as gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. Neuro-divergent individuals bring unique strengths, many excel in problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. Those with ADHD often thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environments, while individuals on the autism spectrum may have exceptional attention to detail and analytical skills.

Neuro-divergent individuals typically face sensory processing challenges. Sensory processing plays a key role in how we experience the world. It involves collecting, integrating, and interpreting information from our senses; touch, movement, vision, hearing, smell, and taste.

Everyone is a sensory being, but challenges arise when sensory input becomes overwhelming or difficult to process, impacting daily life. For neuro-divergent individuals, this can be especially significant in work environments, sometimes leading to feelings of overwhelm, self-doubt, and anxiety.

By understanding and embracing neuro-diversity, we create spaces where everyone can thrive, reach their potential, and contribute in meaningful ways.
